Celebrate learning! What is an Open Badge? Open Badges is an online standard to recognise and verify learning.
It was created by the Mozilla Foundation in 2. Open Badges was developed because there is a strong need in our information society to recognise and demonstrate all the informal learning that happens through work, hobbies, volunteering and various other activities in our lives. The idea behind badges is familiar from military and scouting organisations. An Open Badge is a digital picture, which contains metadata.
The metadata provides information about the issuer of the badge and the criteria used to recognise the skills, achievements and even attitudes of the badge earner. This makes an Open Badge a trusted open credential, with validated evidence of learning. Because the system is based on an open standard, the earner can combine multiple badges from different issuers to tell a more complete story of his or her achievements and interests. The earner can display the badges in his or her e- Portfolio or share them on the Web for employment, social networking, education or lifelong learning purposes. What is Open Badge Factory? Open Badge Factory is a reliable and flexible platform for issuing Open Badges.
It provides a comprehensive set of tools for creating, issuing and managing Open Badges. Open Badge Factory is what your organisation needs if you are planning on designing and managing a meaningful, consistent and sustainable badge system that will build your reputation over time! Are the badges created by Open Badge Factory compatible with the Mozilla Open Badges Infrastructure?
Yes. The badges created and issued by Open Badge Factory fully align with the Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) developed by Mozilla. There are several reasons: With Open Badge Factory you can avoid the fragmentation of your badge system. You can manage all your badges in one place but issue them on other platforms. Using Open Badge Factory’s issuer plugins, you will be able to issue your badges in Moodle and other systems such as Totara LMS, Blackboard, Optima, Word. Press, Canvas LMS, Learn. Dash, Brightspace and Mahara.
When you issue a badge from Moodle or another system using an OBF issuing plugin, your badges will be safely stored and hosted in Open Badge Factory. They will remain functional and valid even if your organisation decides to replace your current learning platform, CRM or HR- system with a new one. Open Badge Factory also provides tools and features which are missing from Moodle and other learning platforms.
These tools will help you to create and manage a consistent badge system. The list of tools is a long one, but here are some examples: badge pathways with milestone badges, a comprehensive reporting system, tools for managing badge expiry and a set of roles for managing badge design and issue as a collaborative workflow. See more about Open Badge features in Moodle and OBF.
Which platforms work with the OBF client application? Client applications, also known as plugins, have been developed for Moodle, Totara LMS, Blackboard, Word. Press, Canvas LMS, Learn. Dash, Brightspace and Optima learning platforms as well as Mahara e- Portfolio. More plugins are coming in the future. We provide an Open API that developers can use to create their own plugins. If you don’t have your own developers, contact us and tell us about your needs. Can we use OBF for free or is there a charge?
We offer 3 service levels; Free, Basic and Premium. At the Free level you can access OBF’s basic features and plugins, but you can only create two badges. The Basic level gives access to most features although some are blocked, such as milestone badges. You can have maximum number of ten different badges at a time. This service level is suitable for organisations with small badge systems.
Premium level customers have full access to all of OBF’s features. You can have unlimited number of badges, although issuing is limited to 1.
